Joint BA/MA Degrees

The University of Chicago offers a number joint degree programs for students in the College. Joint BA/MA programs permit qualified students to enter upon a course of graduate study while also completing their work in the College. Some coursework completed through the MA program can be double-counted towards BA requirements. Typically, joint BA/MA students will have completed all core requirements and major required coursework (see below regarding electives) before beginning a joint program in their fourth year. 

Interested students wish to pursue a joint BA/MA degree should consult first with their College Advisor, and then meet with the Associate Dean of Students for Admissions in the Division of the Social Sciences (Lindsey Weglarz).

The Social Sciences Division offers three BA/MA programs:

• BA/MA in Social Sciences (four-year degree)
• BA/MA in International Relations (four-year degree)
• BA/MA in Economics (four-year degree)

Important note: the BA/MA joint degree is different from 4+1 (Advanced Scholars) enrollment options. Students with questions regarding the differences should contact the Associate Dean of Students for Admissions in the Division of the Social Sciences (Lindsey Weglarz).
