Ari Weil is a Teaching Fellow in the Department of Political Science and the College. He specializes in international relations and studies the relationship between ideational factors and political violence.

His dissertation, Room to Maneuver: Rebel Organization and Ideological Flexibility in Insurgencies, investigates why some rebel groups adjust their ideological frameworks during civil wars. The project presents an organizational theory that explains why certain group structures are more flexible than others. Empirically, he combines qualitative analysis of archival documents with computational text analysis of novel collections of rebel statements. Other research projects examine rhetorical change in armed movements and how constituent opinion shapes patterns of rebel-infighting.

He holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Chicago. In the 2026-2027 academic year, he will be teaching courses in the Committee on International Relations (CIR) and the Masters in Computational Social Science (MACSS).
