Mary Hicks' research seeks to interrogate the multiplicity of connections between coastal West Africa and Brazil through the lens of mutual cultural, technological, commercial, intellectual and environmental influences. Furthermore, she aims to redefine how historians understand experiences of enslavement and the middle passage.
