Adam Almqvist is a postdoctoral Social Sciences Teaching Fellow in the Department of Political Science and the College.

Almqvist’s research explores political authoritarianism in the neoliberal era. Mixing ethnography, archival research, and interviews, his dissertation examines so-called Government-Organized NGOs (GONGOs) in Jordan that target youth, exploring changing autocratic citizenship after the abandonment of state distribution and universal welfare provisions.

Almqvist received a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Chicago in 2023. Born in Sweden, he has studied at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London (B.A.), University of Lund (M.A.), and University of Chicago (M.A.). He has published in Mediterranean PoliticsMaghreb-Mashrek, and St Andrews Papers on the Contemporary Middle East.

In 2023-24, Almqvist will offer a course on “The Comparative Politics of the Middle East” for college students in Spring and teach as part of the “Self, Culture and Society” sequence in Fall and Spring.
