What Are We?

The Tobler Society is an upcoming YouthMappers Chapter at the University of Chicago. Founded with the cooperation of the Center for Spatial Data Science, the Tobler Society seeks to bring together students’ curiosity about spatial data science and expand the incorporation of spatial thinking into different branches of research, as well as harnessing that growing knowledge for social good.

Our Events

Throughout the year, we’ll hold regular tutorials on geographic information systems (GIS), with a focus  on open source technologies, and how to apply spatial analysis techniques. Several times a year, we’ll host “mapathons” through YouthMappers’ humanitarian projects. In addition, we plan to partner with local organizations to employ mapping and spatial data science in the Chicago community, through events like hackathons—or even “mapathons.”

About YouthMappers

YouthMappers is an international university consortium on Mapping for Resilience. The consortium organizes a global community of learners, researchers, educators, and scholars to create and use open geographic data that directly address locally defined development challenges worldwide. Funded by a generous grant from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Youthmappers enables university students to help make critically needed spatial data available around the globe, as well as providing the opportunity for research fellowships and access to an expanding network of mapping and spatial data science opportunities.

Tobler Society Won YouthMapper's 2019 Women's Participation Award and 2019 Most Active [New] Chapter!
