Spatial RAships
The UChicago places listed here are often looking for undergraduate or graduate RAs with spatial skills. You can also check out the spatial@uchicago map for who is doing geospatial work.
If you are interested in spatial research but don't yet have spatial or data science skills, you can gain the foundational skills in these GIScience classes and then apply for a spatial RAship. If you have skills in data science (computation and statistics) but no spatial skills, some projects will provide the spatial skills as part of the RAship.
Spatial@uchicago Resources
If you've taken GIScience classes at UChicago or have experience analyzing geospatial data, you can apply for spatial RAships here. We'll then try to find a match in the spatial@uchicago network. Feel free to follow up (email spatial@uchicago.edu).
We also post spatial RAships in our spatial@uchicago Discord forum (raships-jobs channel).
You can also subscribe to UChicago's GIScience newsletter here, which summarizes spatial RAships, jobs, courses and events. It's designed for undergraduate students in the GIScience Minor but of general GIS interest.
Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation
The Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation offers a variety of RAships for undergraduate and graduate students, often with a spatial data science focus. You can learn about these opportunities here.
Data Science Institute
UChicago's Data Science Institute offers several opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to engage in research and education. For instance, the DSI Summer Lab is an excellent, highly competitive, 8-week summer program you can apply to (CSDS usually mentors 1-2 RAs on spatial projects).
The Data4All High School Bridge Program is a great opportunity to help teach (spatial) data science in the context of scientific reasoning to underrepresented students from Chicago Public Schools. The program is offered in spring and fall, with RA opportunities for 6 undergrad mentors (Python and kepler).
Urbanism Lab
Emily Talen, Professor of Urbanism at UChicago and the Director of the Urbanism Lab, is working with RAs with GIS and/or spatial data science skills and an interest in urban planning. You can email us at spatial@uchicago.edu to check for any open opportunities.
Chicago Studies
The Chicago Studies program usually has several RAships for undergraduate students here.
