Diversity and Inclusion
A deep commitment to diversity is central to our mission of discovery.
Our department is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive culture by bringing attention to and addressing concerns pertaining to issues including (but not limited to) disability, gender identity and expression, nationality, race and ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status. Many of our diversity and inclusion initiatives are led by our faculty and student diversity committees, which aim to promote and support inclusion and equity for individuals from a variety of backgrounds.
In our efforts to promote diversity and inclusion, we aim to:
- Improve the recruitment and quality of experience for students, faculty, and staff from underrepresented backgrounds
- Promote a collective understanding of diversity, inclusion, and equity in our classrooms, community, and research
- Amplify and support the voices of underrepresented members of our department
- Minimize perpetuation and/or creation of negative stereotypes towards individuals from marginalized groups
- Protect members of our community by committing to monitoring and challenging bias;
- Establish and communicate formal mechanisms to report and address bias
Below are a few of the diversity initiatives that our department participates in:
