Workshops

The Gender and Sexuality Workshop and Working Group are primary locations at the University of Chicago where exciting intellectual communities are formed. The Workshop and Working Group bring together scholars from across the University’s schools and divisions to share work in progress, exchange ideas, and offer substantive feedback in an interdisciplinary setting. They also provide students with distinctive opportunities to engage with scholarship in gender and sexuality studies beyond their home disciplines and to participate in conversations with faculty and fellow graduate students across the University.

Gender and Sexuality Studies Workshop

The Gender and Sexuality Studies Workshop (the Workshop) meets every other Tuesday evening and provides a forum for graduate students, faculty, and invited guests to share unpublished research and receive substantive feedback. Papers circulate in advance, allowing the 90-minute session to focus on discussion and exchange rather than presentation or summary. Attendees are expected to read the papers in advance.

Graduate students are encouraged to present works in progress, including dissertation chapters, master’s theses, and papers being prepared for publication. Calls for abstracts are distributed approximately one month before the beginning of each quarter. To join the Workshop mailing list, sign up here or contact the workshop coordinators at gssworkshop@gmail.com. Additional information, including past schedules, is available on the Workshop website.

Workshop Co-Coordinators: Hunter Scott & Alice Centamore
Day & Time: Alternate Tuesdays (even weeks) from 5:00 to 6:20 pm
Location: in person at the Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality (5733 S University Ave, Room 103)

Gender and Sexuality Studies Working Group

The Gender and Sexuality Studies Working Group (the Working Group) meets every other Tuesday evening and provides a low-stakes, student-centered forum for workshopping research and writing at any stage of development. Unlike the Workshop, the Working Group is limited to graduate students and postdoctoral scholars and does not include faculty participants.

The Working Group welcomes students and projects from any field, discipline, or methodological tradition, provided the research engages gender and sexuality studies in some capacity. The format is designed to support open exchange and constructive feedback as students develop their research and writing.

If you are interested in presenting at the Working Group in the Autumn quarter, submit this form by Monday, September 18, 2026 by 11:59pm. For questions or accessibility requests questions please reach out to the Working Group coordinators. We would love to hear from you!
