Travel & Data Funding

As of September 1, 2023

Purpose

Travel and data funding is meant to advance a graduate student’s research through either.

  1. delivering a paper at a relevant conference. For the purposes of funding, the student must be a presenter or discussant at the conference, not merely an attendee.
  2. acquisition of relevant data.

All funds will be distributed as reimbursements, and payments may be subject to taxes. Please inform the Graduate Student Affairs Administrator if out-of-pocket expenses are problematic, and another solution will be found.

Application

Submission of an application does not guarantee funding. Funds are limited; therefore, funding priority is given to students who have not received such travel or data support from these funds in the past, or who have not reached the stated limits of funding.

Travel Expense Funding

The following limits are per student, per year. Each student may apply for offsetting the expense for one conference per year. Reimbursement requests may be made in the following categories:

· Maximum domestic travel is $500

· Maximum international travel is $1000

If the application is approved, follow-up paperwork includes:

  1. Receipts required for reimbursement
  2. Headshot for inclusion on the department website

Data Funding

Each student may apply for offsetting the expense for one type of data acquisition per year, with a cap of $1500 per year. Reimbursement requests may be made in the following categories:

· Maximum data purchase is $1500

· Maximum hire of a research assistant is $1500

Data funding applications must include:

  1. One paragraph description of the data project
  2. Brief description of how the money will be spent, including a budget breakdown
  3. Brief email from supervising faculty member discussing the merits of the request

If the application is approved, follow-up paperwork includes:

  1. Receipts required for reimbursement
  2. 2-page report due by the end of the academic year summarizing findings from purchased data
  3. Headshot for inclusion on department website
