Social Sciences faculty members honored with named, distinguished service professorships

Three social scientists have received distinguished service professorships in recognition of their scholarly contributions and dedication to the University research and teaching mission. Additionally, two social scientists have been appointed to named professorships in the College and the Division, and another as the first to hold the Gary S. Becker chair, named in honor of Nobel Laureate Gary S. Becker, AM'53, PhD'55 (1930-2014).

2014 MacArthur Fellow Tara Zahra Lecture & Reception

The Division of the Social Sciences and the Neubauer Collegium for Culture and 
Society present a celebration in honor of the University’s 2014 MacArthur fellow, 
Tara Zahra, Professor of East European History and the College. The MacArthur 
Foundation praised her for, “challenging the way we view the development of 
the concepts of nation, family and ethnicity and painting a more integrative 
picture of 20th-century European history. With conceptual and empirical rigor, 

Social Sciences Faculty Honored with 2014 Teaching Awards

Division of the Social Sciences faculty were honored for both undergraduate teaching and graduate teaching as part of the Llewellyn John and Harriet Manchester Quantrell Awards and the Faculty Awards for Excellence in Graduate Teaching and Mentoring. Overall, half of all awards were given to divisional faculty this year, a testament to their dedication to the classroom experience.

John Cacioppo appointed to President's Committee on the Medal of Science

John T. Cacioppo, the Tiffany and Margaret Blake Distinguished Service Professor at The University of Chicago, has been appointed by President Obama to serve on the President’s Committee on the National Medal of Science.  This committee of 12 scientists and engineers evaluates the nominees for the National Medal of Science and makes recommendations to the White House.
