Data visualization is an emerging trend in data science, and at UChicago, we wanted to see who was already in the game. In April, we asked UChicago students to submit their completed or proposed visualizations using social science data.

Over the next month, we received eight completed visualizations and five visualization proposals from a mix of College and graduate students in fields including: Statistics, Economics, Sociology, Public Policy, and Business. To help our entrants, we sponsored an afternoon of data visualization with a "data visualization-a-thon" organized by Data Analysts for Social Good at UChicago (DASG@UC).

We are very grateful to our judges Geoff Goldberg, Rayid Ghani and Jason Salavon and to our partners IT ServicesUChicagoTech, the Division of the Social Sciences, and the Polsky Center for their support.

See all of the entries here.

Our winners are:

First Place Visualization: Making Indonesia

"Making Indonesia" is a set of visuals documenting the change in manufacturing in Indonesia from 2000 to 2010.  The data is firm-level characteristics of manufacturing companies, although most graphics display aggregated information across sector or gender. You can see the full interactive visualization here: http://nelsonauner.com/dviz/#Interactive.

First Place Proposal: Visualizing Flight Delay

Tiffany Lin and Michelle Wang, First year students in the College

The proposed visualization "Visualizing Flight Delay" draws data from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics. It would help travelers understand possible causes of these delays, and allow them to better understand and anticipate delays when planning their trips, whether for business or for leisure.
