Open Spatial Science Symposium

AAG Annual Meeting, New Orleans: April 12-13, 2018

Open source and open science are characterized by transparency and reproducibility, which together foster cross-university and international as well as interdisciplinary collaboration. How we seek a better model for the development, dissemination and application of spatial statistical methods in an open source & open science world is an open and essential question. This Symposium presents a curated group of sessions that present cutting-edge open spatial science research and development.

Future of open source packages in spatial analysis - PySAL

Panel

  • Thursday, April 12: 8am @ Galerie 4, Marriott, 2nd Floor
  • Panelists will include the lead developers of PySAL as well as researchers who has been actively using PySAL for solving spatial problems. (more info)
  • Intro by Levi Wolf with Discussion by Dani Arribas-Bel
  • Panelists include James Gaboardi, Wei Kang, Hu Shao, Taylor Oshan (with additional commentary by Levi and Dani).

Open-Source Spatial Statistics

Workshop

  • Thursday, April 12: 10am - 12pm @Beauregard, Marriott, 5th Floor
  • In this workshop, learn how to use open-source tools for both basic and advanced spatial statistics and related data analysis. We will review key functions and walk through multivariate features of the newest release of PySal (a spatial analysis library in python); run some spatiotemporal exploratory analysis in an updated GeoDa; and learn how to stay updated and active in the spatial statistics open source community.
  • Leaders include Wei Kang, Levi Wolf, Dani Arribas-Bel, and Marynia Kolak
  • Registration still open; ID# W3_7 at AAG workshop site.
  • Cost: $7 per person.

Health Data Visualization Contest Winners Announced

Thursday, April 12: 12pm @Oak Alley, Sheraton, 4th Floor

In the first Health Data Visualization Contest sponsored by the Health and Medical Geography Specialty Group (HMGSG), the American Hospital Association, and this Symposium, we encouraged students, faculty, and other members to translate their research into meaningful and modern ways that can impact mainstream health thought. Judges include representatives from academic, private, and public health sectors. Winners will be announced at the HMGSG business meeting. (Apply by April 6.)

Integrating Spatial Statistics within Open Source & Open Science

  • The symposium paper session features research across the Open Spatial Science spectrum, from VGI to Data Fusion in Power Infrastructures to Space-Time Machine Learning. (more info)
