Over the last two years, the polarization of American politics has come into sharp focus. Skepticism of compromise has led both major parties to stage internal debates about ideological purity. The ensuing public conversations, largely taking place on social media platforms crafted to be echo chambers, prize conflict and downplay nuance.
In light of these trends, join the IOP as we welcome Michael Gerson and Peter Wehner for a conversation on recovering the public values of moderation and civility – values they claim are essential for the American experiment to thrive. Mr. Gerson, a columnist for The Washington Post, and Mr. Wehner, a Senior Fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center, have spent much of their careers considering the problems listed above. Together, they will discuss the state of political discourse, the challenges facing American democracy, and their view of a path to recovery.
This conversation will be moderated by IOP Director David Axelrod.
