Wires and Rails Conference

06/21/2018 - 9:00am to 12:15pm
Location:
Neubauer Collegium for Culture and Society

The organizers of this conference, sponsored by the Wires and Rails research project at the Neubauer Collegium, are using Western Union Tariff books and The Official Guide to the Railways to assemble GIS maps of United States telegraph offices and railroad stations in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Our understanding of the impact of these technologies, they argue, will improve with more accessible maps of the United States infrastructure. Conference participants will provide an update on the transcription of the datasets using the crowdsourcing platform Zooniverse. They will also discuss how other researchers can use Zooniverse to transcribe their documents and demonstrate some of the research possibilities with historical infrastructure datasets.
