Bruce Cumings, Gustavus F. and Ann M. Swift Distinguished Service Professor in History
and the College, presents "The Orientalist Roots of American Perceptions
of North Korea."
Professor Cumings will discuss Marx's "Asiatic Mode of Production," Karl Wittfogel's Oriental Despotism, some Hollywood films and characters, and argue that such works have created a deeply-rooted image in the American mind of the "evil Oriental," which Kim Jong-un appears to personify. Chinatown is a (very) rare exception, reversing stereotypes by placing the "Asiatic mode" in Los Angeles in the 1930s, with WASP despots at the helm.
