The Politics of Race in Global Perspective: A Symposium in Honor of Mark Q. Sawyer

03/13/2018 - 4:00pm to 03/15/2018 - 4:00pm
International House, Assembly Hall

The Center for the Study of Race, Politics, and Culture (CSRPC), the Center for International Social Science Research (CISSR), and the International House Global Voice Program at the University of Chicago invite you to attend a memorial symposium honoring the life and work of Professor Mark Q. Sawyer (PhD’99, 1972-2017). Also supported by the International House Global Voices Program.

Mark’s pioneering work in the comparative study of race in the Americas as well as his commitment to mentorship and institution-building have produced a generation of scholars, reshaped the study or race and ethnicity in political science, and created new fields of inquiry across a number of disciplines. A year after his tragic passing, we will gather in the city where Mark was born and raised, and at the university where he earned his doctorate, to highlight his many contributions. This symposium will be an opportunity to reflect on the state of the comparative study of race and new directions that Mark inspired both directly and indirectly.

The symposium will be a free and public event that will consist of an opening reception and four substantive panels, featuring presentations by Mark’s students, collaborators, mentors, and colleagues.
