Teaching Fellow in the Social SciencesThomas Gimbel specializes in the history of ideas, built landscapes, and historical methodologies. He earned his doctoral degree from the University of Chicago in nineteenth and twentieth century Japanese history where he looked at public parks, gardens, and university campuses as manifested philosophical knowledge. He is currently working on his first book, an adaptation of his dissertation Growing Ideas: Nature, Philosophy, and the Creation of Greenspaces in Japan, 1830-1910. Gimbel teaches courses in East Asian history in the core sequences.
