Neubauer Professor, Department of Computer Science

Professor Feamster is Neubauer Professor of Computer Science at the University of Chicago. His research is in the area computer networking and networked systems, with a strong focus on areas that intersect with technology policy and computational social science. His work primarily addresses issues in Internet performance, security, privacy, and censorship, often through large-scale empirical network measurements. His work has significant policy implications, particularly in the realms of Internet equity, online speech regulation, and data privacy. For example, he has collaborated with the FCC and municipal organizations to improve equitable Internet access and address censorship concerns.

Feamster's research frequently applying machine learning techniques to tackle problems such as Internet censorship detection, network security and privacy, and the performance of Internet-connected devices in home networks. His contributions include developing systems for measuring network performance and identifying state censorship by analyzing network traffic. His pioneering work applying machine learning and AI to network security issues such as spam filtering, malware and botnet detection, Internet censorship, and disinformation detection has had a lasting impact on cybersecurity and the filtering of unwanted online content. Nick offers courses at the university that align with research in technology policy and computational social science, including Internet Censorship and Online Speech; Machine Learning for Computer Networks; and Security, Privacy and Consumer Protection.
