Faculty Members Receive Distinguished Service and Named Professorships

Four faculty members from the Division of the Social Sciences have been appointed to named professorships.

 

Steven Pincus

 

Steven Pincus has been named the Thomas E. Donnelley Professor for the Department of History and the College.

 

Pincus’s research explores Atlantic history, the history of Britain and its British Empire, global history, early American history, and the history of the Netherlands, with a particular emphasis on the history of political economy and state formation.

 

Chair Leadership Changing in Five Departments

 

On Thursday, May 31, 2018, Dean Amanda Woodward announced chair transitions in five of the division’s departments. The appointments are effective July 1, 2018.

 

Jennifer Cole will serve as chair of the Department of Comparative Human Development. Jennifer, a social and cultural anthropologist, examines how personal change and individual development shape, and are shaped by, broader political, economic and cultural transformations. She has been at the University of Chicago  since 2001. 

 

Division Celebrates 2017 Staff Service Milestones

The Division of the Social Sciences has announced the 2017 staff service milestones. These awards recognize staff who have worked for the division for 5 years, and every 5 multiple of five years.

 

“Congratulations to these colleagues, and thank you to all of our staff members for their contributions to the successes of across the social sciences. On behalf of our faculty and students, we appreciate your work and talents,” said Amanda Woodward, the William S. Gray Distinguished Service Professor of Psychology and interim dean of the Division of Social Sciences.

 

FRIDAY! Crossing Disciplinary Boundaries: Social Sciences Working Group

The newly formed Crossing Disciplinary Boundaries Working Group will host its inaugural event on September 22, 2017. The day-long event will include research presentations by UChicago doctoral students and discussion by faculty members from departments other than the students' home unit. Built into the day will also be a round table discussion on ways to cultivate cross-department collaboration.
