Rebecca Sandefur, AM’97, PhD’01, discovered intersection of sociology and law as student

 

More than two decades ago, Rebecca Sandefur stepped onto the UChicago campus for the first time as a graduate student, drawn by what she saw as a unique challenge.

 

Even on her school visit, she had sensed the University’s culture of serious intellectual inquiry, one she likened to “a rigorous, bare-knuckle brawl about ideas.” It felt like the perfect place for her to become a sociologist.

 

FRIDAY! Crossing Disciplinary Boundaries: Social Sciences Working Group

The newly formed Crossing Disciplinary Boundaries Working Group will host its inaugural event on September 22, 2017. The day-long event will include research presentations by UChicago doctoral students and discussion by faculty members from departments other than the students' home unit. Built into the day will also be a round table discussion on ways to cultivate cross-department collaboration.

Charles E. Bidwell (1932–2016) Memorial Service

A service in memory of Charles E. Bidwell will be held in Bond Chapel on Friday, January 6th, 2017, at 3:30 pm. A reception will follow in the Common Room of Swift Hall, which is adjacent to Bond Chapel. All members of the university community, friends, family, and the public are invited to attend. Charles, AB’50, MA’53, PhD’56, served as both chair and professor, first in the Department of Education, and later in the Department of Sociology.
