Carroll University in Waukesha, Wisconsin has announced the appointment of Sara Ray Stoelinga, Sara Liston Spurlark Director of the Urban Education Institute (UEI), as its next president effective July 1, 2017. It is the first appointment of a woman as President in Carroll’s 170-year history. This appointment reflects Stoelinga's administrative leadership at the University of Chicago and her work as a scholar and educator.
During her 22 years of working in the field of school education at the University of Chicago, Stoelinga has served in a broad range of roles and most recently played a central part in UEI’s success. She ultimately oversaw all aspects of UEI including the Urban Teacher Education Program, the UChicago Consortium on School Research, UChicago Charter School, and UChicago Impact, where she serves as board chair.
Stoelinga has written and spoken extensively on urban schooling, publishing numerous articles and two books focused on teacher leadership. She has taught in the University of Chicago Urban Teacher Education Program, the College and the Graham School. She recently developed a series of courses on education for the Careers in Education Program and taught one of the University’s first MOOCs, focused on the history of public education and school reform in the United States. Stoelinga received her BA and PhD in sociology from the University of Chicago.
