Chair Leadership Changing in Five Departments

On Thursday, May 31, 2018, Dean Amanda Woodward announced chair transitions in five of the division’s departments. The appointments are effective July 1, 2018.


Jennifer Cole will serve as chair of the Department of Comparative Human Development. Jennifer, a social and cultural anthropologist, examines how personal change and individual development shape, and are shaped by, broader political, economic and cultural transformations. She has been at the University of Chicago  since 2001. 


David A. Gallo will serve as chair of the Department of Psychology. Dave researches the basic neurocognitive processes of human memory, how we reconstruct the past, and how healthy aging and Alzheimer’s disease affect these processes. He joined the University of Chicago  in 2005. 


Adrian Johns will serve as interim chair of the Department of History while Emilio Kouri, current chair, is on leave in 2018-2019. Adrian also chairs the Committee on Conceptual and Historical Studies of Science. He joined the University of Chicago in 2001. His 2009 book, Piracy: The Intellectual Property Wars from Gutenberg to Gates, won the Laing Prize and was selected as Book of the Year by the American Society for Information Science and Technology. 


Rob Shimer will serve as chair of the Kenneth C. Griffin Department of Economics. Rob is an American macroeconomist and labor economist who examines the intersection between labor markets, financial markets, and macroeconomics.  He joined the University of Chicago in 2003.


Linda Waite will serve as interim chair of the Department of Sociology while Karen Knorr Cetina, current chair, is on leave next year. Linda joined the University of Chicago in 1991. Her research interests include social demography, aging, the family, health, sexuality and social well-being, and her current research focuses on the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project, which she directs. 


In a message to all division faculty, Woodward said, “Please join me in thanking Susan Levine, Psychology; John List, Economics; and Margaret Beale Spencer, CHD, for their leadership and dedicated work as chairs, as well as Emilio and Karen for their past dedication and willingness to continue in their roles for another term.  I am grateful to them, and to Jennifer, Dave, Adrian, John, and Linda for contributing to the division and the university in this essential way.”
