Provost’s Summer Fellowship

The University of Chicago Provost’s Summer Fellowship will provide a limited number of summer fellowships for Summer 2009. The Fellowship provides $3,000 to doctoral students in Scholastic Residence who matriculated prior to Spring 2007 and who wish to engage in academic-related activities during the Summer Quarter. The fellowship can be used for—but is not limited to—the following purposes: proposal preparation, exam preparation, dissertation research or write-up, language study at the University of Chicago or another domestic or foreign institution, and a collaborative project with faculty.

Eligibility

Applicants must be enrolled in full-time Scholastic Residence in the Divinity School, Humanities Division, or Social Sciences Division and have matriculated prior to Spring 2007. Preference will be given to meritorious applicants who have no other summer funding and who have not previously received summer funding. Both U.S. citizens and international students are eligible. At the end of the summer, recipients must submit a summary of Provost's Summer Fellowship activities to their Dean of Students.

Applications

Applicants must file a Provost Summer Fellowship application, available in February from the Office of Graduate Affairs and from the Deans of Students in the Social Sciences, the Humanities and the Divinity School. The application requires a statement of purpose describing how the student will use the summer fellowship, and a letter of support from a faculty member who is familiar with the applicant’s work, endorsing the proposed use of fellowship funds.

Timeline

Applications are due to the student’s Dean of Students office in mid-April, and notification of selection sent to applicants in May.
